As part of President Obama’s ConnectED initiative, which pledges to connect 99 percent of schools and students to high-speed broadband internet and wireless technologies, the Associated Press reports Apple will contribute $100 million in iPads, computers, and other hardware. The program officially kicked off today when Obama visited a school in suburban Maryland to elaborate on the plan laid out in last week’s State of the Union address.
Apple is joined by AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, each kicking in wireless services, cash, and other contributions. Microsoft has also joined the ConnectED movement, providing educational discounts and free copies of their Office suite.
The initiative should upgrade technology at about 15,000 schools over the next two years. All in all, the contributions of Apple and others could impact 20 million students or more.
