As Apple’s plans for 2014 start to take shape, rumors have been all over the map about potential smartphone and tablet lineups. While some expect Apple to refresh both of its current iPad models and introduce a larger “pro” version of the slate, at least one analyst thinks Apple will scale back on tablets in the new year and push the launch of additional iPad variants to 2015.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, an analyst with a solid track record of Apple predictions, believes that “tepid” iPad mini with Retina display shipments combined with the device’s lower profit margin will see Apple pumping the majority of its resources into the iPad Air in 2014. The newly introduced model sold like gangbusters during the 2013 holiday season and could see a refresh in the second half of this year with updated features including an A8 processor and Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Meanwhile, Kuo expects the rumored 12.9-inch “iPad Pro” to be a more likely launch for early 2015. Development of the larger iPad along with a new iPad Air will divert resources away from a potential iPad mini refresh, which Kuo also sees as unlikely for launch in 2014.

Apple may choose to spread out new tablet launches as the company plans to introduce several new products this year, including at least one new iPhone, the long-rumored iWatch, and an Apple TV refresh backed by major television providers. Launching only one new tablet in 2014 would not be surprising at all considering what Cupertino has on its slate.
