Hot on the heels of their $16 billion acquisition by Facebook, WhatsApp has announced today that voice calls will debut in the popular mobile messaging app later this year. Expect the feature to arrive on iOS and Android during the second quarter of the year. Nokia and BlackBerry devices will receive the new service later in 2014.

Shedding some more light on why Facebook valued the company at such a high sum, WhatsApp updated their figures for number of users during the announcement of voice features. The app now claims 465 million active users per month with some 330 million each day. The number actually represents a jump from the 450 million figure Facebook provided last week. Either the publicity of the buyout helped to add 15 million users or Facebook was providing an initial rough estimate.

WhatsApp provides currently provides a text messaging services for mobile users that is free for the first year followed by a yearly subscription cost of $1. The low-cost alternative to SMS has quickly risen to prominence, especially among an international audience. It is unclear at this time if voice calls will come included in that annual pricing or at an additional cost.
