Instagram iOS update lets you fine-tune Lux

Instagram’s Lux feature — the little sun icon that when enabled acts as a sort of combo brightness/contrast/exposure/saturation booster — can look great when it really works with a shot. Unfortunately, too often the effect comes across as over-the-top. The Facebook-owned app has remedied this issue in its latest iOS update, adding a slider control to the Lux parameter to vary how the effect colors its photographic subject.

Cooler still is the ability to add an anti-Lux effect by moving the slider into the negative realm, creating a washed-out look that can add further vintage flair beyond Instagram’s 19 filter selections. As to those filters, Instagram hasn’t added any new ones in the latest update, but the tunable Lux control definitely increases the mileage of those already in place, allowing users to color their photos in new and interesting ways.

The latest update to Instagram, which is version 5.0.6 for those keeping tabs, went live late last night and is available now as a free download. Grab it via the App Store/iTunes now.
