Starbucks to bring tipping to iOS app

Mobile payments are a largely untapped market, but one retail giant has been using them to great effect. Starbucks for some time now has offered customers the option to pay for their daily dose of caffeine via a mobile app. Next week, that app will expand to allow for customers to add a tip on top.

After paying via the app, a push notification will kindly suggest that you tip your barista in the range of 50 cents to two dollars. Customers will be able to enter and adjust their tip over a two-hour window following the initial purchase.

But that’s not all. The update, which is scheduled to hit the App Store on March 19th, will also introduce “Shake to Pay.” Shake to Pay brings payment information to the forefront of Starbucks’ app just by, you guessed it, shaking your phone while the app is open.

It’s great to see a retailer taking mobile payments seriously. Starbucks says over 5 million transactions are processed via their app each week, amounting to 11 percent of total sales. Now, if only others would take notice and get on board with the mobile payment revolution.
