iOS 8 screenshot leak shows new cloud-connected apps

A leak originating on Chinese social network Weibo surfaced today showcasing icons for two new apps apparently arriving with iOS 8. While the veracity of the images has reportedly been verified, we have reason to believe they are merely placeholders, but more on that in a minute.

Going along with a steady flow of iOS 8 leaks over the past couple of months, the leak shows homescreen icons for Healthbook, an app we have heard mention of several times, along with new apps Preview and TextEdit. The latter pair look to be cloud-connected versions of their long-running Max OS X counterparts.

Both apps gained iCloud functionality on the OS X side with the update to Mountain Lion, but neither has been  integrated into iOS yet. The leaked screen along with supporting rumors say the apps won’t mirror desktop functionality entirely, though. Rather than act as basic document, PDF, and photo editing tools, TextEdit and Preview will exist mainly to view corresponding file types synced from a Mac and stored in iCloud.

As for the icons, TextEdit and Preview strike us as early mockups. They take the existing OS X icons and squeeze them down to fit on a mobile display. The aesthetic, however, clashes with that established in iOS 7 — an aesthetic that presumably will carryover to iOS 8. We expect Apple will give the pair a dressing more similar to other iOS 8 apps as launch approaches.

As for Healthbook, the icon is more or less what we expected. It mirrors iOS 7’s Passbook icon while emphasizing the health and fitness aspects of the app.

iOS 8 should see its public debut with a preview at WWDC this summer. It should be followed by a general launch later in the year, likely to coincide with the release of Apple’ eighth generation of iPhone devices.
