United Airlines has announced a new in-flight entertainment service for select itineraries. A selection of over 150 movies and 200 TV shows will soon be available to help take the edge off short and lengthy flights alike, free of charge, all from your iPhone or iPad.

United will begin rolling out the new offering to its fleet of Airbus A319, Airbus A310, Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 777-200 aircraft, with the majority of domestic flights covered by the end of the year. The airline’s eventual goal is to offer some form of the new in-flight entertainment package on every plane it operates.

In order to take advantage of the new service, iOS users must download the latest version of United’s app from the App Store. Streaming movies and television can also be accessed from any laptop (Android device support is coming later). The airline recommends charging your device fully — power outlets are not something that will be offered alongside the new device-based entertainment system. Once in the air, passengers can access the system over the plane’s onboard WiFi, though users won’t need to purchase an in-flight internet package to stream content via United’s app.

United follows a trend that has become quite popular in the airline industry lately. Other operators, including Southwest Airlines, currently offer similar in-flight entertainment packages, bringing the media selection usually reserved for long, international flights to anyone with an iPhone or iPad. The new service will trickle out to a handful of United flights in April and expand to more as the year goes on.
