Yesterday’s rumors of a lower-storage, lower-cost iPhone 5c were true. Today the phone launched in several regions around the globe, selling the handset for €559, or €50 ($70) less than a 16GB model. Several carriers, including O2 in the UK and SFR in France, are offering the handset free (or virtually free) with a long-term contract agreement.

While Apple would never admit, the release is seen by most as an attempt to milk additional sales out of a device that by all accounts did not perform nearly as well as the company had hoped. While the 16GB model debuted around the globe as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5s, that model ultimately attracted the most buyers, forcing Apple to quickly cut production of the 5c in order to keep up with demand for the more premium model, which included features like Touch ID.

The 8GB iPhone 5c remains unavailable in some areas, namely the United States and other parts of North America. It is unclear if Apple has plans to release the cheaper model in these regions. With the new version of the 5c competing very closely with the iPhone 4s, it is unclear if the company has plans to discontinue that model.

The launch of the new iPhone 5c variant is one of two lineup changes that Apple undertook today. The company also discontinued its iPad 2 in favor of reintroducing the iPad 4 at the $399 price point.

Soooo someone help me out here. Will carriers be picking this up? If so they could sell it on contract for $29.99 or free right? Or is it unlocked and thru apple only? I mean I see what they’re trying to do here and price wise this is how it should have looked from the unveiling. The media and consumers have written it off as a flop but I know some apple fans who buy the 5c for their teens and say it’s really not that bad and looks pretty good for plastic

I guess my question is assuming it even comes out here in America, which may not happen because of its reputation lol.

    • Some carriers in Europe are offering it for as low as free along with a wireless contract. It doesn’t appear it is headed to the US any time soon, though. If it did, it could feasibly sell for less than $50 on a two-year contract, which would definitely be more in line with what people initially expected before the 5c was announced.
