As financial institutions, carriers, and smartphone makers struggle to come to an agreement on a single, unified mobile payment experience, individual retailers have been gradually taking the situation into their own hands. Burger King will be the latest to introduce the concept with its new mobile app.

Much like Starbucks’ popular app for iOS, the soon-to-launch Burger King app will allows users to preload a digital wallet with funds that can be used to make fast food purchases via their smartphone. While these sorts of apps don’t provide an overarching solution to the mobile payments conundrum, do go a long way in introducing and acclimating customers to the concept, which could pave the way for wider adoption of phone-based transactions.

Burger King’s goal, however, is most likely not to spurn customers toward dishing their cash and cards. Rather, the Whopper restaurant wants to get a jump on competitors like McDonald’s, utilizing technology to attract younger diners to their stores. The app will also offer users coupons and other deals to further widen its appeal. Customers will not be able to place orders in advance for store pickup, but the ability could eventually makes its way to the app.

The new app will debut soon with a small number of the chain’s restaurants supporting the service starting next month. A nationwide rollout will continue over the months to follow.
