Original Apple retail partner closes after over 35 years of business

March 29th will mark the end of an era in the Apple world as the first ever retailer to partner in selling Apple’s line of computers and other products will shutter its doors. Minneapolis’ FirstTech, which started in the late 1970s as Team Electronics, will close after being unable to compete in an ever-shifting economy that favors national retailers and online shopping.

FirstTech attributes the decision to changing market pressures. Margins on Apple products has always been thing, but national retailers with the ability to still offer steep discounts over Apple’s pricing, sometimes going below cost, have cut into sales. Apple has recently changed policies to be more friendly in doing business with such chains like Best Buy and Walmart, dramatically impacting FirstTech over the last few years. The emergence of multiple Apple Stores in the Minneapolis area only added to pressures.

Despite attempts to diversify its business under the conditions, branching out into services and products not offered at competing stores (including Apple-owned outfits), FirstTech informed its star of 75 that the business would be shutting down. While operations will continue through the end of march, one satellite store has already been closed as of Wednesday.
