While a 12-inch iPad is looking less and less likely for 2014, Apple might be targeting the size for another product family. According to rumors originating with a reputable user over at China’s Weiphone, this year’s MacBook Air product refreshes could include a 12-inch Retina model.

The new hi-res model would forego a cooling fan and feature a slimmer design than currently available 11 and 13-inch editions. A new trackpad design is also said to be under consideration, moving away from the mechanical button of current MacBook laptops. We caught wind of a patent that might give clues as to Apple’s plans. The patent described a multitouch trackpad featuring tactile feedback that could replicate the “click” of its mechanical counterpart.

The 12-inch MacBook Air was the subject of recent speculation by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Last year Kuo suggested that Apple could deliver a model with many of the same specs, including the slimmer profile and Retina display.

Apple most recently updated its MacBook Air lineup at last year’s WWDC show, unveiling new 11 and 13-inch computers utilizing efficient Intel Haswell processors. Since its inception, the Air lineup has expanded as a focus for Apple, replacing standard MacBook models. A Retina version would offer similar options to Apple’s premium MacBook Pro line while retaining a portable form factor.
