iTunes Radio is branching out into news and talk with the addition of a new National Public Radio channel. The NPR “station” offers a 24-hour stream that will mix live broadcasts with pre-recorded media from the nonprofit’s stable of popular shows.

Listeners can expect to hear favorite’s like This American LifeThe Diane Rehm Show, and All Things Considered, while local NPR stations will soon begin offering their own iTunes Radio channels featuring regional programming and newscasts. NPR and its partners already offer live streaming and other content via the web and individual apps, but Apple’s radio platform offers even greater access to a “digital savvy” public radio audience, according to Zach Brand, vice president of digital media for the station.

While iTunes Radio is not quite as ubiquitous as its competitors, it has show strong growth in its first six months of public availability. A recent survey found Apple’s answer to Pandora, Spotify, and Google Play Music has quickly risen to become the third-ranked music streaming service in the US.

iTunes Radio is accessible via any iOS device, including iPhones and iPads, as well as through iTunes on Mac and Windows PCs. Rumors suggest the service could become a standalone app as part of the launch of iOS 8 later this year. NPR’s new digital station should be available to stream now.
