Apple rolling out related search suggestion in App Store

Apple finally takes a step toward addressing the woefully limited App Store search functionality with what appears to be the controlled rollout of new related topic suggestions. Appearing beneath the search bar, a new horizontally scrolling section features search terms and categories related to an initial query.

For the most part, the suggestions seem to break down into subcategories of the main search terms. For instance, searching for “news” might suggest to a user searches for “business news” or “tech news,” and these suggestions each offer their own related searches.

The new feature should help users narrow down and refine their searches while also providing a degree of app discovery. It does not address the much larger issue of search result accuracy. Attempting to locate a specific app in the App Store is often like searching for a needle in a haystack. Even popular apps often do not come up as a top result when searching for them directly.

Apple has said that refining the search experience in the App Store is a priority, even going so far as to purchase Chomp, a dedicated search engine for apps, in 2012. Since that acquisition, however, seemingly little has been done to address App Store search issues head on.

Related searches is a start, even if it is a small one. Apple appears to be testing the and adjusting the new feature as it rolls out on a limited basis. No word when a wider push will come.
