Instagram has announced a new milestone as the social photo sharing network has surpassed 200 million users. The news comes in the shadow of parent company Facebook’s acquisition of virtual reality gaming startup Oculus Rift.

Of the 200 million users now signed up for Instagram, a total of 50 million have joined in the past month alone. That period started just after the company announced the addition of video to their service and encompassed several other major milestones and announcements. In the past six months Instagram saw its biggest day ever, announced new direct picture messaging, and exceeded 20 billion photos shared.

50 million additional users in six months is nothing to scoff at, especially in the face of increased competition from the likes of Vine and Snapchat. Instagram on iOS most recently saw an update bringing finer control over the app’s Lux parameter, allowing customers to add a new flavor to their photos.
