How Steve Jobs got at least one Google employee fired

Steve Jobs and Google might have been mortal enemies, but they agreed on one thing: don’t even think about sniping employees. The alleged collusion between the two companies to illegally ban the recruitment of Apple employees by Google and vice versa has been the subject of an ongoing investigation, and newly unsealed documents reveal just how far things went.

In one instance dating back to 2007, an oblivious or perhaps overzealous Google recruiter contacted an Apple employee via email about a potential position with the search giant. The email found its way to Steve Jobs who contacted Eric Schmidt, at the time CEO of Google, kindly reminding him that inter-company recruitment was a no-no.

Google’s response? The swift firing of the employee responsible for originally sending the recruitment email. Now that’s just cold.

While it’s fair to see why the two highly-competitive companies didn’t necessarily want to be sharing their best talent, it’s also beyond reasonable that investigators are taking a look into the legality of the matter. One thing was and remains true: you don’t mess with Steve Jobs?
