In addition to all the functional and “under the hood” changes introduced this week at WWDC, one item that was notable, but hasn’t received as much press, is the icon design refresh that OS X Yosemite will receive. We heard extensively about the use of transparency and a cleaner, whiter design motif. But what about the flatter app icons that now occupy our dock? Admittedly, many of the changes are subtle and the apps are still easy to identify. However, more interestingly though, is the obvious simplification and lack of depth in the icons and the design direction Apple is taking both iOS and OS X. Here is a side-by-side comparison of the changes as of WWDC, with the Mavericks icon on the left, and Yosemite on the right.
