(11) iOS 8 features not talked about at WWDC

iOS8-preview-features

WWDC was packed with so much information that Apple couldn’t even touch upon all the major updates and changes coming to iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite in the 2 hour Keynote. Having said that, there are always additional items that are added, and some that are removed during the beta period, prior to the release of the final versions to the public.  In other words–there will still be many changes coming over the summer.

The iOS 8 and OS X beta’s were shared with developers this week and there was plenty to get excited about that wasn’t demoed during the Keynote. Some of the more notable features that we are excited to see come to iOS 8 include…

DuckDuckGo can be added as your default search engine

I did’t see this one coming–but for those concerned with privacy issues. DuckDuckGo doesn’t use tracking cookies and doesn’t ever save a record of your IP address, like Google and others do. You can read about it at length here.  Now for those of you that prefer to have Google, and others, use your private search info to provide guidance and suggestions for you in other integrated apps, then you can still select them as your default search, too.

Battery usage by app

Here’s one of those no-brainer features that Android and even OS X has had for awhile that iOS 8 user will finally gain access to.  Battery life draining faster than a Mac running Flash?  Now you will be able to view this information in the settings menu.

Wi-Fi Calling

This is another one of those great ideas that may or may not have backing from the majority of the carriers. So far here in the US it looks as as though only T-Mobile has the tech available_and_ has committed to providing support for WiFi calling to iPhone owners.

New Camera Features (4)

One of the best mobile stock cameras is once again improved to include a self-timer section that will allow users to select from 2 different (right now) countdown preferences before the camera takes a burst of 11 pictures.

In addition, now you will have the option to take time-lapse videos when you open the camera app. With this setting you are basically video recording through the camera app, and when you stop you will now have a video that is sped up considerably.  This is especially helpful if you are recording events that take a long time to evolve–like perhaps the sun rising or setting.

You can now set your focus point and then independently adjust your exposure up or down depending on the situation for each picture.

Finally the iPad will have the ability to take panoramic pictures as well as the iPhone–wait, whose taking pictures with your iPad?!

Request desktop site in Safari

Now while you are viewing any page in Safari, and it is displaying the mobile version, you can request the desktop version of the site by tapping the address bar, and then swiping down.  This action will reveal two options add to Favorites or Request desktop site.

Siri with Shazam integration

While listening to a song you can ask Siri what song is playing and you will be prompted with the information and how to purchase the song via iTunes.

Auto-delete Messages

Messages are notoriously responsible for eating up large amounts of storage space on your iPhone, and most people aren’t even aware of it.  Now you have the ability to set hoe long you want to store (all) your messages.  The (current) available settings to choose from include Forever, 30 days & 1 year.

In case of emergency card

Included in HealthKit is a very useful card containing all your personal information that might be good to know in an emergency like blood-type, allergies, people to contact on your behalf, and any other medical “conditions” you might already have that Dr’s or first responders might need to know.
