During WWDC 2014 last June Apple introduced OS X Yosemite–the next update to Mac OS X.  Apple sent home beta versions of Yosemite with every one of the eligible 9 million registered developers in June.

However, if you were one of the first 1 million people to sign up to try out the Beta after WWDC, Apple promised it would be available for you to install soon.  Well, that day has finally come 7 weeks later.

OS X Yosemite will be available this fall. The OS X Beta Program lets you take part in shaping it by test-driving pre-release versions and letting us know what you think. Your comments will help us make OS X better for all Mac users. Sign up today, and the beta software will be available for you to install soon.

In addition to a link to download the Yosemite Beta, Apple has also provided a Program Guide, that has more information about the Beta and how you might be able to provide feedback.

To install the beta you need to do the following

-Make sure your Mac can run the Yosemite Beta by fulfilling the following…

  • Have Mavericks 10.9 or later installed
  • Have at least 2G of memory
  • Have at least 8 GB of available disk space

All of which can be determined by clicking on “About this Mac” under the Apple icon.

In addition, Apple warns you to back up your computer because you are about to install beta software that is still under development, and some applications and services might not work as expected. Furthermore, you should strongly consider installing on a Mac that isn’t part of your main daily work-flow because of the unproven stability of running a beta OS during the testing period.  Also, Enabling iCloud Drive during setup will disable iCloud Documents and Data for all your existing devices.

If you still decide to proceed at this point, you will receive a promo code to redeem in the Mac App store to download the beta.
