I decided this year, for the first time ever, to forego my usual policy of pre-ordering my new iPhone online as soon as it was available for standing in line at an Apple Store. Although I am still hopeful that I will be able to pick up my iPhone today, I will probably never subject myself to this process again anytime soon.

My quest to buy an iPhone 6 Plus on launch day

imageI decided this year, for the first time ever, to forego my usual policy of pre-ordering my new iPhone online as soon as it was available for standing in line at an Apple Store.  Although I am still hopeful that I will be able to pick up my iPhone today, I will probably never subject myself to this process again anytime soon.

The fun actually started yesterday evening when my AT&T contact texted me that there were 4 people already in line at 6 pm. That number grew to over 20 by 9 pm. Concerned that the elusive iPhone 6 Plus might be in short supply at mobile carrier stores, I decided to get up early and try an Apple Store. After calling around to a couple local stores, it appeared that the general mall policy was not allow people to park at mall until after 6 am.  Mind you Apple store doors opened at 8 am and most likely we would be let into the mall even earlier.

We were instructed to stay in cars until we were told it was time to lineup. You can imagine the mass chaos that ensued when 200+ people tried to merge into a “orderly” forming line. Not horrible, but I easily lost 30+spots in line during this process because I refused to cut in front of others or push my way through.  I couldn’t help but wonder, though, if this would hurt my chances at acquiring my 6 Plus.

Soon we were ushered into the mall in groups of 20, where we then walked to our new line. At this point apple employees offered us snacks, coffee and water. At about 7:15 they begin using their new digital ticket system to gather information about our carrier, storage size and iPhone 6 model we wanted, so that they could compare it against their real-time inventory.

Then came the out of stock announcements. One by one–colors, storage capacity, carrier specific models. We all started worrying they would run out of what we wanted before it was our turn. Luckily, though, when it was my turn they had what I wanted–64GB 6 Plus in Space Gray!

Unfortunately, that was 6 hours ago!  Now I wait my turn to pick up my confirmed iPhone as I watch pre-order guests stream in by the dozens to stand in a short line that is handles completely separately from the walk-ins. Will it be worth it?  Absolutely. Will I do it a different way next time, or maybe return to preordering?  Without a doubt. Hopefully I can update this post with pics of my new iPhone 6 Plus soon. Until then–I wait…
