How to Jailbrake iOS 8.0 – 8.1.x on Windows

The paint on iOS 8.1 is barely dry, and already the talented Chinese jailbrake team, Pangu has pawned the latest version of iOS. Just like when they splashed onto the scene at the end of June by jailbraking iOS 7.1.1–this, too, caught us by surprise.

What you need to know about iOS 8.1 Jailbrake

WARNING : As with all jailbrake tools–especially this one, proceed with extreme caution. This particular tool is not for the average consumer. It is more advanced and has many steps that could potentially cause difficulty. Proceed at your own risk.  In time, it is highly likely that a more polished/refined Mac version will most likely be released that will be much easier to use. Do not be in a hurry. Proceed only if you are very confident in your understanding of the process and the potential risks involved. Here are some additional important facts about this jailbrake.

  • The Pangu website entirely in Chinese
  • As with the original 7.1.1 jailbrake, Pangu has initially released a Windows only version of their tool.
  • Jailbrake works on iOS 8.0 – 8.1.x
  • Cydia is not bundled with the jailbrake, and has to be downloaded separately.
  • Pangu is compatible with the following devices

How to Jailbrake iOS 8.1 – 8.1.x

-It is always best to start with a fresh restored version of iOS on your device–in this case iOS 8.0 – 8.1.x

-Disable Find My iPhone and the passcode lock on your device

-Install iTunes on your Windows machine, and ensure that iTunes recognizes your iOS device when you connect it to your computer.

-Download the Pangu tool

-Right click on the Pangu tool, and select Run as administrator → Yes

-Uncheck the box on the Pangu tool to prevent necessary software from installing on your iOS device

-Wait until the Pangu tool recognizes your connected iOS device and click the blue jailbreak button

-After the process is complete, launch the Pangu app on your iPhone

How to install Cydia

After jailbraking your device, follow the steps below outlined by Jeff at iDB to install Cydia.

-Install OpenSSH on your device from the Pangu app

-Download and install CyberDuck SFTP client

-Find your iOS device’s Wi-Fi IP address via Settings → Wi-Fi → ‘i‘

-Launch CyberDuck and connect to your iOS device’s IP address

Download the needed Cydia files, and place them on your iOS device via CyberDuck

-While CyberDuck is open, click Go → Send Command and paste the following command and click Send:
dpkg --install cydia-lproj_1.1.12_iphoneos-arm.deb cydia_1.1.13_iphoneos-arm.deb

-Click Go → Send Command again, and type reboot and click Send. This will reboot your iOS device.

After rebooting your device, Cydia will appear on your Home screen.
