I always enjoy Michael Mace ‘s thoughtful and insightful posts at his Mobile Opportunity site. Today, he focused on a recent study his company, Rubicon Consulting, has done about and amongst US smartphone users.
Some of the facts and findings are very striking to me, such as:
Only 10-11 % of adults in the US own smartphones. That ‘s a smaller percentage than I would have guessed. I think this number will grow a lot in the next 5 years “ and to me that means all these players in this space still have it all to play for.
Between them, RIM (Blackberry) and iPhone account for 75% of those smartphone users in the US. That ‘s a huge chunk. Seems like, even with all that remaining near 90% to play for, all the rest need to step up their games big-time – and soon.
And maybe the most surprising to me
Although the iPhone application store has been getting huge press coverage, the ability to add applications is only the #4 priority for iPhone users, below browsing, e-mail, and 3G capability.
The fact that browsing is the top priority for iPhone users is no surprise “ but seeing the ability to add apps down at only the Number 4 priority is a big surprise to me. I imagine this may change, move upwards, in future as well.
I know for me the apps factor is probably my second most important factor in going with the iPhone, right behind the overall UI and user experience.
How about you all? What ‘s your top priority when it comes to choosing the iPhone, or any smsartphone?
