OK, it ‘s not really fair of me to laugh at this one “ as it ‘s a (paid for) subscriber only article at the Wall Street Journal, so I only read the headline “ but I can ‘t help it.  This one just screams comedy to me.

Verizon are the guys who spurned Apple and the iPhone a few years ago, allowing AT&T to jump in and grab that exclusive deal in the US “ in what must go down as not one of the smartest moves ever by a carrier.

And Microsoft are the guys who have had an ‘iPhone rival ‘ mobile platform for around 10 years now “ which has been decimated in under two years by the iPhone.  Also the guys who brought us the Zune as an ‘iPod rival ‘ “ think we know how that ‘s working out.

This headline sounds a little like ‘The 3 Stooges In Talks To Outsmart Einstein ‘ to me “ cannot help laughing.

UPDATE: OK, now various sites have got coverage of this up.  Apple Insider provides these extra details:

Citing people familiar with the matter, the financial publication said the two companies are currently discussing possible terms of the deal. It adds that Microsoft has been working on its own touch-screen smartphone hardware under the code-name "Pink."

The project would reportedly leverage and then extend upon Microsoft’s existing Windows Mobile operating system, adding new capabilities that would undoubtedly mirror many of Apple’s advances in the mobile space, including the Windows Marketplace for Mobile — a clone of Apple’s App Store.

More background doesn ‘t make it any less funny to me, I have to say.  The project will ‘leverage ‘ and extend upon Windows Mobile?  The mobile platform that has been so thoroughly trounced by the iPhone platform in so many ways in such a short time?  And the copycat App Store?  That ‘s the foundation for this rumored initiative?

I know MS are known for imitating and borrowing and making a success of things “ but I think they ‘ve been shown to be pretty clueless in the mobile arena over the last few years “ so where are the brilliant, new ‘iPhone rivaling ‘ type ideas going to suddenly spring from?
