I ‘ve posted a couple times in the past “ here and here “ about superb artwork created on the iPhone, via the Brushes app.  Today there is news that a real heavyweight artist “ Britain ‘s David Hockney “ has opened a new exhibit featuring artwork created on his iPhone.

The exhibition is titled ‘Drawing In a Printing Machine ‘ and opened this week at London ‘s Annely Juda Fine Art Gallery.

Hit the jump for more detail on the exhibition and Hockney ‘s thoughts on the using the iPhone

The 71-year-old painter said invested in the popular, high-speed internet-enabled, media-playing, touchscreen cellphone just four months ago, but has created a host of drawings ” including landscapes, portraits and images of flowers ” on it.

His exhibition Drawing In A Printing Machine, which opened at London’s Annely Juda Gallery on Thursday, features iPhone drawings as well as other pictures created on his computer and with a camera. The 10 landscapes and 18 portraits will remain on display until July 11.

It ‘s great that even at 71 Hockney is so open to experimenting with new tools and mediums for his art.  I tried in vein to find any definite examples of iPhone work (the screencap at the top of this post was not clearly labeled as an iPhone or PC / Photoshop (or both) image).  I ‘m also very keen to know which app was used by the artist “ though I would bet it is Brushes.

I also like a couple quotes from Hockney on his iPhone experience:

"Whoever would have thought that the telephone would bring back drawing?" he quipped to British media, adding that his iPhone trick was to "stroke the screen very softly."

He also said he enjoyed drawing flowers and emailing them to friends. "My flowers last!" he said.

The exhibition runs from today through July 11th.  If I was still living in London I ‘d definitely be checking this one out.  I hope in coming days or weeks, we ‘ll see some examples of Hockney ‘s iPhone drawings appear online.
