Apple wants profit and they want market share. The trick is balancing the two. Surely Apple makes more money per iPhone with an exclusive deal, but they would sell more total devices if iPhones were available on both AT&T and Verizon. Yes, Verizon ‘s network is CDMA, not GSM, and so it would require Apple to produce different hardware. But there are some number of Verizon customers who won ‘t switch to AT&T but who would buy an iPhone from Verizon, and my guess is that that number is high enough for Apple to at least consider producing Verizon-compatible hardware.
John Gruber has a great post up at his Daring Fireball site, with his thoughts on the rumored recent talks between Apple and Verizon. He offers a ‘What ‘s in it for them? ‘ breakdown which runs through how Apple and the two carriers stand to gain from any iPhone-related relationships.
The post also gives us Gruber ‘s take on the likelihood of any sort of ‘imminent ‘ iPhone on Verizon deal, as well as on the more medium-term prospects for the iPhone on multiple carriers in the US, and some very interesting thoughts on how Apple ‘s long-term plans for the iPhone platform may well parallel their long-term strategy for the iPod, including expanding the number and type of models available.
Very good article, and lots of great food for thought. Check it out HERE
