After all the myriad of stories on Apple ‘s stupid, inconsistent, and thoroughly unclear process (or lack thereof) for approving and rejecting apps, and a number of recent headline-making rejections, there is possibly some good news on the way on this subject.
According to a report at Apple Insider, Apple may be set to loosen the restrictions on ‘objectionable content ‘ (one of the SDK sections that has caused so many dumb and controversial rejections over recent months) when reviewing apps.
Following the rejection of an iPhone app for content the developer didn’t produce itself, Apple has given signs it may allow more risque software on the App Store once iPhone OS 3.0 and its enhanced parental locks become a reality.
Apparently, the Newspaper app from Makayama was rejected because its content include the UK ‘s Sun newspaper, and its topless Page 3 Girls. The app ‘s publisher was told ‘it would be appropriate ‘ to re-submit the app after OS 3.0 comes out though “ which has lead lots of folks to believe that policies in this area are likely to change once 3.0 is out.
The upgrade, due to ship in the summer, is set to provide significantly expanded content filters that aren’t limited to Apple’s software. Although the block system hasn’t been fully illustrated, it should let parents screen for particular kinds of apps and, in theory, prevent younger children from seeing Page 3 or other more controversial content in the future.
This is another rumor that I ‘d love to see prove true. If stronger parental controls help pave the way for more sensible App Store decisions, then hurrah for stronger parental controls (not that kids won ‘t likely outsmart parents on this one anyway, but that ‘s another story). Hopefully they ‘re working on a rating system as well “ so apps can start having the same sort of standards applied to them as music and movies do within iTunes.
