Yes, I admit it “ most things iPhone + Twitter related nearly always grab my attention “ and today ‘s attention-grabber in this area is TweetMic “ a new iPhone app that let ‘s you create audio tweets and publish them to Twitter.
I ‘ve been playing around with the app for just a little while this morning, and I like it so far. Although it offers a very basic view of your own recent tweets, this is absolutely *not* a Twitter app. It is a Twitter add-on app “ that does just one thing, but does it well and with a clean, simple interface.
The screencap above shows you the only screen that ‘s really of any interest in TweetMic. No bells, whistles, or unnecessary distractions on this screen. You just tap the big red mic button to start recording, and tap it again to stop.
You can play your recording back, edit the text field at the top of the screen to introduce your audio tweet (or just leave it at the default which says ‘Listen to my audio tweet ‘), and then simply tap the big blue bar to publish your tweet.
I think this app might prove a useful companion to a full Twitter client. For some occasions, it ‘s easier and faster to just record a quick thought and fire it off, rather than having to type out a message. One of the first things that came to mind for me was watching the NBA playoffs so many nights lately. You can carry on watching a game, with no need to look away from the action, while recording your ‘Whoa “ did you see what Lebron just did? ‘ message and quickly throwing it up to Twitter.
The other thing that occurred to me is that this could be a bit of fun for ‘Name that tune ‘ type messages when you ‘re bored as well.
If I get real brave, I may even try a few of these as brief intros to a new review on the site. Would that be useful to any of you, or is it easier / better just to read a normal text tweet?
My biggest hurdle with this app is that I hate hearing my own voice played back “ probably need to skip that button on the app and just go straight to publishing to avoid cringing and ditching of messages. I think that the laziness about typing “ especially while watching a game or similar situations “ may outweigh the dislike of my own voice on many occasions as well.
I ‘m not sure how much I ‘ll use this app over time, but I like having this audio tweet option and I ‘ll definitely be keeping it on my home screen for now.
The only serious flaw I ‘ve seen in this very simple app so far is that there is no easy way to delete a recording “ if you don ‘t like your first take for example. You currently have to exit the app and go back in to get the recorder back ready for a new recording.
I ‘m not sure what “ if any “ limits there are on audio recordings (by length of recording or similar) “ but I do know I posted a 47-second one this morning without a problem “ and I don ‘t imagine I ‘ll want to do any that are much longer than that.
Oh “ and I guess I ‘ll try to refrain from using this app in public places “ or risk ending up like the guy in this very funny video called Twitter in Real Life. 🙂
TweetMic is out now in the App Store, priced at $0.99.
