Today, Apple emailed developers informing them that, henceforth, all apps will be reviewed for 3.0 compatibility. Said Apple:
Beginning today, all submissions to the App Store will be reviewed on the latest beta of iPhone OS 3.0. If your app submission is not compatible with iPhone OS 3.0, it will not be approved.
Apparently this decision, added to the quicker release of the latest beta (around 8 days after last one, rather than the previous 14 day pattern) and the rumors that the Palm Pre may launch during the first week of June, are leading to lots of speculation that the release of iPhone OS 3.0 may be coming quite soon.
I like the sound of that speculation, of course. I ‘ve been running all five of the 3.0 betas, and like 3.0 a lot so far. Spotlight (for both search and quick app launching) and copy & paste have become good friends already. As with any beta, it is far from perfect and there are plenty of bugs and oddities to keep things interesting “ but I have zero desire to go back to a 2.x version of the OS.
I also like the decision to force all App Store submissions to be compatible with 3.0, if only for largely selfish reasons. Although apps compatibility overall has been superb on 3.0, I still have a handful of apps that either don ‘t launch at all or have serious issues on the new betas “ so I ‘d love to see some compatibility updates for these.
Is it too early to start the ‘office pool ‘ on when 3.0 will get released?
If I had to bet, I ‘d go with June 12th “ close enough to a Palm Pre launch (if there is one fist week of June as expected) to muddy their waters a bit, last day of this year ‘s WWDC, and hopefully just a few weeks ahead of a new model release. 🙂
