Review: Star Trek Countdown

A couple of weeks ago I was parked on the freeway waiting for an accident to be cleared when I naturally began browsing the App Store. I have been incredibly excited about the new Star Trek movie and when I saw Star Trek Countdown #1 in the list of recommended apps I was immediately intrigued. Star Trek Coundown is a 4-part series that serves as a prequel to the movie, filling in some of the backstory and adding more depth to some of the characters. The movie stands alone, obviously, but the comics paint a picture of the events occurring before the opening scene. I’m not really a fan of comics, but I figured it was worth $.99 to check out the first part and see how the app works and the storyline. I got so completely sucked into the story I bought the other three editions as well (each part is $.99).

The app is simple, swipe right or left to advance to the next screen; it works beautifully as a way to tell a story. As you can see from the screenshots, the graphics are very well done. In comic book style, the artist framed each scene appropriately. Some scenes took up the entire screen, while others took up only a portion. Double-tapping on the screen presents you with the typical i button in the bottom right corner. This settings screen lets you jump directly to a page and adjust the transition style. Leaving it at the default ‘slide’ was my preference; and judging by some of the designs I think that was also the preference of the artists. If you get interrupted in the middle of reading, opening the app takes you right back to where you left off. iVerse media built the app and has published 88 titles in all, from Star Trek to Flash Gordon.

If you enjoyed the movie and like reading comics you’ll find this to be a worthwhile $.99 purchase to give you more of the story and experience a cool new use for the iPhone. Star Trek Countdown is a 4-part series and each part costs $.99. You can get them here: Star Trek Countdown #1, Countdown #2, Countdown #3 and Countdown #4
