New iPhone Apps: Bebot = Part Robot, Part Synthesizer

Bebot

I was struggling for a way to describe Bebot, and then I spotted the very first line of its App Store description – ‘Part robot, Part synthesizer ‘ and that became my post title, as it sums it up quite nicely.

I am about as musical as a rock, so I can ‘t really comment much on the synthesizer side of things, except to say that there are a good number of controls to play with and adjust.

The funny, entertaining robot side of things is what ‘s got me hooked on this app though.  I can ‘t wait for my daughter to see this one.  The animation on the robot is great, and the range of ways you can make him sound seems nearly endless.

The controls are easy and fun too “ just tap and press and swipe around the screen, using multiple fingers as well if you like, to get the robot sounding off for you.  A quick double-tap in the bottom right corner gets to all the finer synth controls.  Even as a non-musical dork, I ‘ve found it to be good fun tweaking these and seeing the robot ‘s output change for me.

Just so you don ‘t have to rely completely on my quick, non-musical dork impressions, here ‘s a little slice of its App Store description:

Bebot is a feature-packed, polymorphic musical synthesizer with a unique multitouch control method, personified on-screen as an adorable animated robot character who moves and sings the notes while you play.

And here are some of the app ‘s features:

  • Four different synthesis modes
  • Juicy analog sounding filters
  • Versatile delay/looping effect and overdrive distortion
  • Full-fledged realtime synthesizer, offering a wide range of sounds and a high degree of control via the multitouch screen
  • Up to four notes can be played and controlled simultaneously using multiple fingers
  • Note grid display, autotune system, and user-programmable scales help you play in tune with ease

One obvious wish list item for me is that the app add an ability to record / save your creations.

You can check out a fun video demo of Bebot HERE.

Bebot is big fun and a keeper for me.  I have a feeling this will be another big hit with my daughter.

Bebot is in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
