Apart from my one minor gripe, I am very fond of this app. Although I was unaware of the book and the web site and the momentum behind the barguments ‘movement’, it’s definitely a concept I’ve embraced and cherished for many years. In fact, when my brother and I venture out, I’m not sure we cover much of anything that does *not* fit into the barguments category. :)

Review: Barguments for iPhone

Barguments

OK, so some of you (many of you?) may have already heard of barguments “ but I never had before spotting the Barguments app for the iPhone. I don ‘t know how I missed them before, because they are right up my alley.  They are defined as:

A debate with no right or wrong answer that must be uncomplicated enough to be discussed after three beers.

Allrighty!  I love those sort of debates, and I ‘m not against three beers either. 🙂

So once I discovered what barguments are “ and having engaged in them for years and thinking myself something of a barguments veteran “ I had to check out the iPhone app

The Barguments app “ like the debates it focuses on “ is uncomplicated.  Very, in fact.

Once you launch the app, you ‘ll see an Intro sort of screen that offers up the definition of barguments (as quoted above).  From there you can just shake the iPhone to be presented with a bargument for your debating pleasure.  These range from the sublime

Barguments

To the ridiculous

FastFoodLockin

To the downright scary

And even the unthinkable

Ok, I ‘ll stop for a moment.  You may have guessed by now “ I like this app.  There ‘s not a whole lot more to explain in terms of how it works / what it does. You can check out the Top 5 tab where the most popular (heavily debated?) barguments are shown and you can cast your own vote on these “ and there ‘s 53 pages worth of them to work with!

There ‘s also a tab for submitting your own bargument, and a page to buy the Barguments book (where all of this got started).

Some of the barguments also let you tap to see ‘What America thinks ‘ on the subject “ for instance this one which I heartily disagree with:

I have one gripe about this app and one quick suggestion for it.  My gripe is that only the main page is iPhone optimized “ the other three look rapidly slapped together and just link to non-optimized pages on the Barguments web site.  These require a lot of zooming and scrolling to get around, and should be done better.  Just as a quick example, if I zoom in enough to see the title text of a Top 5 bargument, I then have to scroll sideways to get to the Vote button.

My one suggestion is that it would be nice to be able to choose a bargument by category. Choosing randomly by shaking is cool, but sometimes you might just want to focus on unwinnable superhero-related debates, or a classic sports question 🙂

Apart from my one minor gripe, I am very fond of this app.  Although I was unaware of the book and the web site and the momentum behind the barguments ‘movement ‘, it ‘s definitely a concept I ‘ve embraced and cherished for many years.  In fact, when my brother and I venture out, I ‘m not sure we cover much of anything that does *not* fit into the barguments category. 🙂

This app strikes me as a must-have if you like bars, and beers, and this classic type of debate.  It should sure help you to never be short of a conversation starter.

You can find Barguments in the App Store now, priced at $0.99.
