My favorite rumor for the holiday weekend comes from John Gruber and the Daring Fireball site.  One of the best things about this one is that Gruber is said to have a quite strong track record for his Apple-related predictions.

And he has some very positive thoughts on what ‘s in store for us with the expected new / next iPhone this summer

A new computer almost always feels faster than the one it replaces. In the old days, though, every few years you ‘d get a computer with not just a faster processor but a next-generation processor, and the resulting performance increase was dramatic. For the Mac, those were bumps like the first 68030s and 68040s, or the first batch of PowerPCs. For the PC, the 386, 486, and Pentium.

Based on information from informed sources, I believe the processor in the next-generation iPhone is going to be that kind of upgrade.

A dramatic performance increase sounds a lot better than a kick in the teeth to me.  If Gruber is right about the next model having a 600MHz processor, and the sort of performance boost that will provide, then I ‘m certainly going to feel even more psyched when lining up to get it.

He also believes, as per many recent rumors, that we ‘ll see max. storage increased to 32GB, RAM doubled to 256mb, video recording capability added along with basic video-editing software (in OS 3.0), and little change in the overall industrial design of the device.

All of that sounds damn good to me.  Roll on WWDC “ let ‘s hear it from the horse ‘s mouth.

Check out the full Daring Fireball post for lost more detail and Gruber ‘s thoughts on all of this
