Yikes “ a Windows Mobile screencap! And from quite a ways back it looks like too. It ‘s a shot of Sprite Backup, showing how easy it is to choose “ down to the Nth degree “ what you would like to backup / restore on your mobile device.
In other words, it ‘s highlighting a pretty basic and simple feature for any good backup routine “ the ability to say ‘I want to grab everything in the My Documents folder, but nothing else ‘ or maybe tell it you just want selected documents out of that folder. Basic stuff, good stuff, stuff you absolutely cannot do on the iPhone.
I know “ I only just ranted and moaned about this a few days back “ but today provided another good reminder of why this is such a big miss for the iPhone right now.
Ilium Software posted today on the status of their eWallet for Mac product “ you can see details on that in my earlier post, but the gist is that it does not sound like it will be out imminently.
The thing is, I could get by without a Mac app (and the ability to sync that it would give me) if I had an easy way to backup a wallet file from the iPhone. I don ‘t tend to make very frequent or numerous changes to my wallet “ so a once a week backup would do me just fine, and I wouldn ‘t miss sync (I usually don ‘t even sync that often right now with 1Password, which reinforces this point for me).
I might be able to manage this via a file sharing app, but it strikes me this would just add layers of inconvenience and awkwardness, or not even be do-able, due to the iPhone ‘s restrictions on what areas of its file system 3rd party apps can access.
OK “ I ‘ll cut the whining short for today “ but this is another chink in the iPhone ‘s armor, another area where it seems the Palm Pre may show it up, and another thing they should be working on adding to OS 3.0 (or just allowing 3rd party devs to do what they need to do)
