Hacker Evolution is a new iPhone game that claims to offer you the chance to ‘become a computer hacker ‘ and ‘go against a network of computers ‘ and try to hack into as many computers as possible.
I ‘m going to keep this post brief because the app bored me and failed to deliver in my view “ so I just don ‘t have that much to say.
I ‘m not sure what I expected out of this game, apart from just summing it up as ‘more ‘. I ‘ve done a little bit of ‘hacking ‘ in the past “ as part of getting the CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) certification for my job, and then in vulnerability testing for clients “ so I thought this game might be a bit of fun and might test my recollection of some of the things I ‘ve learned in the past.
No such luck. The game doesn ‘t really require any thinking or any skill to ‘hack ‘ anything. It just presents you with a set of servers, shows some that have lower firewall ratings than your own firewall, and then you press a button saying ‘Hack ‘ on any of those and you ‘ve done it. If a server has a higher rating than your firewall, you can hit a ‘Virus ‘ button and achieve success hacking it.
I guess what I imagined for this game was something along the lines of being presented with various devices on a network “ maybe workstations, servers, routers etc. “ and needing to recon your targets (identify their OS, apps and services running on them etc.) in order to assess what they might be vulnerable to, maybe some fun ‘scanning ‘ elements where the game pretends to assess a range of devices on a network for you and show open ports / active services, choose which devices to try to attack and with what sort of exploits, progress from gaining a foothold on one device on to bigger targets round the network, and so on.
Just looking around and seeing my firewall is a 4 and oh hey there ‘s a server that ‘s a 2, and pressing a big Hack button to take it over was not doing it for me at all.
Maybe the game gets more complex or challenging as you go along, but it pretty much lost me at Hello with its simplistic approach. Not a keeper for me.
If this simple approach sounds like your cup of tea, you can find Hacker Evolution in the App Store now, for $0.99.
