New iPhone Apps: Phatware WritePad Series

WritepadNotes

This is rapidly becoming a sort of ‘Blast from the Windows Mobile past ‘ week for me “ what with talking about how nice Sprite backup was, news from Ilium software, and now some very good news from Phatware, another publisher of one of all-time favorite WinMo apps “ PhatNotes.

Phatware are officially launching a set of apps which they ‘re calling the WritePad product line for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  The set of apps allows you to create and organize notes, affairs, and events.

There are plenty of existing apps around that do these things and do them well, but there are a few things that make the Phatware offering interesting to me

Firstly, as stated above, PhatNotes was a huge favorite of mine, for many years it was my absolute go-to note-taking app on a number of mobile devices and smartphones, and it was wonderful to use. So the WritePad Notes application, which is part of this set, is of big interest immediately.

Second, but for me even more importantly, the WritePad set of apps offers built-in handwriting recognition.  This is something I have sorely missed on the iPhone.  Over the years of using mobile devices I ‘ve learned that I ‘m in the minority as someone who enjoys, and even prefers, using handwriting recognition within note-taking / other apps, but I really do “ and I was always super fast when using this method as well.

So I am very keen to give this a whirl on WritePad Notes.  So keen in fact that I ‘ve recently order a Pogo stylus for the iPhone and expect it to arrive today “ hurrah.

Here are some details on the handwriting recognition side of things in the WritePad apps:

WritePad is a text editor developed specifically for iPhone and featuring handwriting recognition input for cursive, print, and mixed handwriting styles, in addition to an iPhone soft keyboard. Further, WritePad supports multilevel undo and redo, cut, copy, and paste commands, text selection, and includes a spell checker. It also offers a text analyzer allowing users to dial phone numbers or open URLs embedded in the text.

Advanced features of WritePad’s handwriting recognition engine include a user dictionary, intelligent handwriting recognition which improves recognition quality over time, and an auto-corrector which automatically fixes common spelling and recognition errors. WritePad’s shorthand feature allows users to perform editing commands, insert current date and time and repetitive text by writing a short name and drawing a circle around it, and simple gestures to perform standard editing commands.

Oh, that sounds so good to me “ must get back on track here

Phatware ‘s WritePad apps lineup includes three new products (to go along with Writepad itself, which has been in the App Store for some time):

WritePad AffairsWritePad Affairs is a simple affairs (tasks, jobs, contracts, etc.) organizer for iPhone and iPod Touch that uses the WritePad editor for text entry.

WritePad EventsWritePad Events allows you to record various life events, such as appointments, meetings, phone calls, tasks, etc. Each event may contain type, subject, start time, duration, note, contacts, categories, and more.

WritePad NotesWritePad Notes Edition is a simple notes organizer for iPhone and iPod Touch based on the WritePad Text Editor.
