Hurrah – Brushes App Gets a Big Boost from New Yorker Cover Stories

Brushes app for iPhone

I ‘m always happy to see stories about developers of great iPhone apps doing well out of their efforts “ and this week we ‘ve got an excellent example of that.

The New York Times reports that Steve Sprang, the developer of the Brushes app, has seen a bit of a sales bonanza this week following all the massive press coverage of The New Yorker magazine cover for June 1 being drawn entirely on an iPhone “ and of course the artist used Brushes to do it.

Even though I am a million miles away from being artistic enough to make good use of it, I ‘ve long been a big admirer of Brushes.  My daughter has loved it since the first day she saw it and has done some wonderful drawings with it (may share some of those some day).

Here is some of the good news shared in The New York Times about sales of Brushes this week:

On Monday, Mr. Sprang said the application had its highest-selling day since it was first released into Apple ‘s App Store in August, with 2,700 copies at $4.99 apiece flying off the virtual shelves.

‘That ‘s even bigger than when Apple featured the application on iTunes, ‘ said Mr. Sprang, who estimated that on average the application sells roughly 60 to 70 copies each day.

To date, the application has sold around 40,000 copies, he said.

And some even better news on the overall state of play for Sprang as an iPhone developer:

‘Some developers are able to make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this, ‘ he said. ‘I ‘m not at their level. But I am able to make a living and support myself doing this, which is what I wanted to do. ‘

I think Brushes is a superb app and richly deserves the recognition and success.  Every time that I can recall that I ‘ve come across really stunning visual art created on the iPhone, Brushes has been the tool that was used.  A few examples that are always worth re-sharing

Disney artist Stef Kardos ‘ work that we posted on back in January:

Lastly, I have not seen it confirmed anywhere as yet but I would wager a large amount that the renowned British artist, David Hockney, is also producing his iPhone art entirely or primarily with Brushes

Anyway, congratulations to Steve Sprang and Brushes for their recent burst of recognition and success “ couldn ‘t happen to a nicer app 🙂

If you ‘re looking to give your artistic talents on the iPhone a whirl, Brushes is HERE in the App Store and costs $3.99.
