Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Free Reign: the new JAiB series where free apps rule. The plan is to cover four to six free apps every week from any category of the App Store and provide bite-sized overviews of what they ‘re all about. In this first week we ‘ll be covering Quantum Pool, Flickit, Spray Can, TonePad, and Popcorn Game.
Why so many apps in one post, you ask? Because when it reigns it pours!
Concept: ‘What pool could be if reality didn’t get in the way’. 11 wild, wonderful, and very different sorts of pool tables – featuring black holes, pinball style bumpers, and lots of other fun ways to play.
Strengths: Great idea, whacky physics that make for some crazy shots and possibilities, variety of games included.
Non-strengths: Graphics and UI could be nicer, slicker. Feels a little like a retro game, but one in need of a bit of a refresh.
Overall: Big fun.
Concept: Upload your iPhone pics to Flickr quickly an easily.
Strengths: Select and upload multiple photos, fast uploads, shows status very well as uploads progress, you can assign tags, sets, and location info, edit standard Flickr metadata, rock solid and dead easy to use.
Non-strengths: None to speak of.
Overall: Great utility for Flickr users.
Concept: Real music too hard for you? How about connecting the dots instead?!
Strengths: There ‘s a giant grid with dots that you can light up by touching. Every couple of seconds a pulse rushes across the screen and makes a sound depending on which dots are lit up. Change the pattern by shuffling, rotating, or erasing the dots you lit up.
Non-strengths: None to speak of.
Overall: Incredible value for $0.00 “ a lot of fun to play with, great party trick!
Concept: You put the pop on the corn by tapping the kernels and bringing them to life!
Strengths: You touch a kernel, it pops and looks very tasty. Some kernels are burnt, some are smiley faces that you tap three times. Cool music that changes with the levels.
Non-strengths: A lack of an interesting twist to make it more than a cute distraction. There ‘s a time limit and a score at the end, but no reason to really care.
Overall: Just like those huge buckets of popcorn, you ‘ll be all over it at first, but it ‘ll get old after a while. I still can ‘t believe it ‘s not butter, though!
Concept: Ever wonder what it would be like to have a spray can on a touchscreen device?
Strengths: Sounds and looks like a spray can. You can even shake it. It has six arrows pointing at where to push.
Non-strengths: I couldn ‘t feel the spray 😛
Overall: Another cute little trick. I lent it to my mom and she pretended to clean a keyboard with it, much to my dad ‘s surprise.
