In this week ‘s free reign we ‘ll take a quick look at:
- Weather Eye
- Tumblr
- ATM Hunter
- Paper Toss
I ‘m definitely enjoying trying to get into the habit of surveying the App Store for interesting offerings. It ‘s cool to see what ‘s popular, what ‘s not, and get more of a feel of what the appscape is like. Btw “ iTunes links to the apps are in the bolded titles 🙂
Weather Eye:
Concept: A simple, but more powerful solution than the built-in weather app.
Strengths: It ‘s a great little app that ‘s as accurate as my TV forecast, since it ‘s actually from the weather network. Loads quickly, supports multiple cities; also shows current, short term, and long term forecasts.
Weakness: None to speak of except for the non-intrusive ads at the bottom “ but that ‘s what keeps it free.
Overall: Forget the default weather app – use Weather Eye instead!
Concept: Simple and official blogging tool for use with Tumblogs.
Strengths: Just as easy to use as Tumblr ‘s web client. Choose one of the criteria shown in the screenshot and the content is put online with the option of previewing it afterwards.
Weaknesses: Without cut and paste, linking is a real drag; Landscape support is missing.
Overall: iPhone Tumblr access seems to boil down to this or Tumble; I think Tumblr takes the cake here.
Concept: Makes it easy to find ATM machines around the world. Will use your current location if you let it, or you can search by address / zip code.
Strengths: Easy to use, strong search features and filters that let you look for 24 hour ATMs, or ones from a specific bank, surcharge free outlets etc. Tells you whether an ATM is at a bank or local store, and gives a profile page for each one that’s packed with good info – and gives driving directions and maps for nearest locations.
Non-strengths: None to speak of.
Overall: Very useful app when you’re out and about.
Concept: Ever tossed a crumpled up piece of paper into a trash can at the office? That’s the game here – with the goal being to get as many in a row as you can. There are easy / medium / hard levels, with the trash can moving farther away, and you’ve got electric fans / wind conditions to deal with when tossing.
Strengths: Excellent graphics, great sound effects, fun and surprisingly addictive gameplay, challenging game.
Non-strengths: No two-player or multiplayer options as yet – although you could easily just pass the phone.
Overall: This is the epitome of simple and fun. And very addictive.
