Evernote – Major Update Coming & Tons of Big New Features Planned

Evernote

Evernote is one of my real go-to apps, on both the iPhone and the desktop (and the web for that matter) “ so hearing about upcoming features or improvements for the app is always exciting to me.  And oh boy is there lots to be excited about just about now.

TUAW did a great video interview with Evernote ‘s CEO and lead Mac developer at WWDC, and it is chock full of very good news for fans of Evernote, on all platforms and especially on the iPhone.

Here ‘s just some of what jumped out for me in the interview:

  • Major new release coming soon
  • iPhone 3.0 release = ‘huge step forward for us ‘ “ like a desktop app “ will be out ‘hopefully as soon as 3.0 ‘s out
  • With the iPhone 3.0 SDK, they ‘re able to share a lot more code between Mac and iPhone versions.  The iPhone app will ‘feel a lot faster ‘ and ‘more like a real app
  • The Evernote guys are excited about the improved camera in the iPhone 3GS “ especially the auto-focus feature – ‘that was just about the only way that the current generation iPhone was not better than just about anything else on the market for us

And more about planned new features (not sure whether these are set for inclusion in that next 3.0 release, or a little farther down the line):

  • More and better options for exporting of notes “ xml, rtf, pdf, audio notes etc
  • Putting captured video into Evernote will be possible
  • June 24th will be one year (since public beta launched)
  • Sharing & Collaboration – ‘whole bunch of sharing and collaboration options ‘ “ share notebooks with specific people, give different levels of access (read-only, read-write etc)
  • Focus on usability “ all of our stuff will become ‘much better looking ‘
  • International versions “ new languages every month or so
  • They realize the editor portion of the app “ editing text notes “ is not good enough “ working on that a lot
  • will be adding search within audio notes

As a heavy user of Evernote, all of the above is like music to my ears.  I ‘m so glad to hear that they ‘re aware of the shortcomings of the text editor and are devoting some major attention to it.  Sharing and collaboration features will be a huge plus for the app as well. Getting video into notes, searching within audio notes, more and better ways to export data “ all of these are also strong additions.

It ‘s hard to argue with great apps that just keep getting better “ and Evernote is definitely one of those.  The TUAW interview has lots more details, and if you ‘re an Evernote user, it ‘ll have you smiling and feeling very pumped up about what ‘s coming soon for the app.  It ‘s in two parts and runs around 15 minutes in total “ including a few funny ‘out-takes ‘ type moments at the end of Part 2.  Check it all out HERE.
