One of the iPhone ‘s best apps just got a whole lot better. As promised, MLB At Bat has kicked off live video of complete games today. I ‘m watching the Cubs play the White Sox right now, with Zambrano on the mound for the Cubs!
I ‘ve seen a little flakiness with using this feature “ but overall performance is more than good enough to enjoy watching a game “ and I ‘m doing so while writing this.
This is just a fantastic feature to add to an already stellar app, and I ‘m confident that any initial kinks will get worked out quickly.
Here are a few things to note about watching live games on MLB At Bat:
At the moment, two games per day are being shown live “ one in the early afternoon, and one in the evening. The first game time slot is perfect for providing a bit of lunchtime entertainment.
You need to be running iPhone OS 3.0 and the latest 1.2.0 version of MLB At Bat to enjoy this new feature.
You have to have Location Services turned on and allow MLB At Bat to use your current location, so it can check that you ‘re not attempting to watch a game from within a local blackout zone.
TV commercials are not shown “ instead you get ads showing off some other MLB offerings.
The live game stream has been mostly good for me so far, with only a couple laggy / jerky sort of moments. It has crashed once back down to the home screen, and the game is in the top of the 4th inning just now. The one time it crashed, it then wrongly identified me once as being in a blackout zone when it came back up (perhaps that ‘s why it dropped me also) “ but it got it right at the second attempt and has been good ever since. That is quite possibly more of a Location Services fail anyway.
