R.I.P to Ripdev’s Installer App

Ripdev have announced this week that they will soon be effectively shutting down their Installer app and its app repositories.  This will happen on July 1st “ so if there is something you urgently want off there, best to go get it now, or very soon.

Installer was the very first medium for browsing, finding, and installing jailbreak apps back in the old school 1.x firmware “ and early jailbreak “ days.  Everything from the essential BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH to Summerboard for theming, Snapture to extend the functionality of the iPhone camera, and even video recording apps.

In the last year it has been superseded by Cydia, which has become the clear leader for jailbreak apps, and now even has some paid-for apps.  I have spent much less time with my phones jailbroken since firmware 2.x came along, and I ‘ve never managed to become as fond of Cydia as I was of Installer.  Probably more a ‘devil you know ‘ thing than anything else “ but always found Installer much easier / friendlier to use.

Right now, I ‘m completely happy with 3.0 and a stock phone, no plans to jailbreak at all “ but I have to say it ‘s still a little sad to hear Installer ‘s shutting up shop soon.
