An interesting day for all things Palm vs. Apple and Pre vs. iPhone. PreThinking highlights a Sprint ad that they say throws a punch at both Apple and AT&T. It takes a good swipe at those two and the iPhone, with the image of the chewed-up apple, as well as the ‘perfect timing ‘ headline and body text touting $1,200 savings over two years with the Pre contract on Sprint instead of an iPhone.
In the Apple / iPhone corner , Fake Steve Jobs has made a comeback this week “ and has some typically scathing and close to the bone remarks aimed in Palm ‘s direction:
Just heard this from Katie. Palm, which has reinvented itself with a business model that basically involves doing whatever Apple does, only two years later, announced today that its CEO, Jon Rubinstein, is planning to receive a liver transplant
My favorite comment of the day though is from John Gruber at Daring Fireball “ telling us exactly why the Pre needs to succeed:
The reason it ‘s important that the Pre succeeds is so the mobile market doesn ‘t wind up like the desktop market ” with just one single great experience, alone in a sea of crap.
Great point. The Pre does strike me as the first smartphone that offers a worthy challenge to the iPhone, at least on the ideas and UI side of things. And Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and most of the others fit the ‘sea of crap ‘ description quite well.
