I have been using the Free Memory app for quite some time on my 3G and 3GS iPhones “ to check on available RAM, and free up additional memory when needed. It ‘s a very good app, but unfortunately, it does not yet let you free up any additional memory if there is already 20MB free. That seems fine on the iPhone 3G, but for the 3GS another utility currently does a better job.
iStat lets you free more memory on the 3GS even when you already have over 20MB free. So this morning for instance, even though I already had 27MB free I asked it to free up more and I ended up with 151MB free.
iStat lets you monitor system information on not just the iPhone, but also on Macs as well as Linux and Solaris machines. I don ‘t need it for any of that so I ‘ve just been trying out its iPhone related features.
In addition to showing available RAM memory, it also shows you your amount of free storage space left on the device, your current IP address / addresses “ on WiFi and cellular networks, your devices unique identifier (UDID), and its MAC address.
The UDID and MAC address can be emailed out to yourself or others. The UDID is what ‘s used to register devices for ad-hoc distribution of beta iPhone apps “ so it ‘s very handy to be able to email it straight out of iStat.
Overall, iStat is a nice utility app, even if you ‘re only using it for the iPhone itself. Thanks to EIC forum member Ramesh for making me aware of it.
You can find iStat in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
