I ‘m no video expert. Not even close. So take this story – of an aspiring pop singer ‘s video of a debut single being shot entirely on an iPhone 3GS – with as many grains of salt as you like.
The short story is: the singer is Reyna Perez, the song is ‘Love Love Love ‘, and the video was shot by her fiancee, and video producer, Ari Kuschnir.
The longer story is as follows:
Reyna Perez has embraced the concept of digital collaboration with her
self-titled EP. She recorded each song in Brooklyn on acoustic guitar at a home
studio and emailed the tracks to producer Michael Maurice (Curio Sound) in
Denver. Over the course of 2 months, Maurice mastered her songs into full
fledged productions using Logic software and his own instruments. "I’ve given
them a warm analogue sound, without using any actual analogue equipment; it’s a
testament to the times, and I’m very happy with the results," says Maruice. The final mixes arrived via ftp on Friday, June 17th, the same day the iphone
3GS hit the streets. Video producer Ari Kuschnir, Reyna’s fiancee, purchased
the iPhone after a two hour wait, made shorter by listening to the tracks.
Hearing the new music and playing with 3GS, he had an idea. "It became clear
that the phone’s camera quality was good enough to shoot a music video. It
seemed fitting for the project."
I traded a few emails with Ari and he gave me a bit more background on how the video was done, on the iPhone 3GS and with some help later from Final Cut Pro:
This music video was shot with the new iphone 3GS video camera (the first?) and then I loaded all the clips onto my laptop. I used final cut pro to import and edit the individual clips. So there’s a bit of post involved but we did some things on camera too, trying to get a beautiful image and embracing the limitations of the camera (like auto shutter).
Basically the camera shoots at 29.97 frames per second at 640 * 480 pixels using the h264 compression, which is good quality.
I’m attaching a screenshot of my phone with a lot of the shots. My hope is that for the next one I can shoot and edit on the phone itself, you can do it for still photographs right now so hopefully someone is working on that app.
Here ‘s that screencap:
There are further photos of the ‘making of ‘ for this video at Reyna ‘s Facebook page, as well as more detail on the song, and her story. Check all that out HERE.
My feeling “ again as an absolute non-expert “ is that this video was likely shot with an iPhone 3GS. It seems pretty well done, and if legit, it ‘s a nice demo of what can be done with the 3GS.
Go HERE “ or just tap the image at the top of the post “ to see the video. Let us know what you think of it. Or share any similar videos you ‘ve seen that were done with a 3GS.
