To celebrate the fourth of July this weekend we are reviewing fewer free apps than normal. This means that you, the reader, will spend less time indoors and more time outside celebrating and enjoying and taking auto-focus type pictures with your 3GS’s. We’re a thoughtful bunch here at JAiB. This week we’re covering:
About Device

Concept: Useful for submitting device info like an iPhone’s UDID (needed for special beta apps or ad-hoc distribution)
Strengths: Shows the type of phone, generation, capacity, OS version, and UDID (which I promptly replaced with a black rectangle for this post). Includes a button to mail the info by pasting it into the Mail app.
Non-strengths: None to speak of.
Overall: A pretty specialized little app, but it’s useful if you do a fair amount of beta testing.
Target Practice

Concept: An accelerometer-based shooting gallery with one target.
Strengths: The gun sounds suitably powerful.
Non-strengths: Everything else in the app, from the decals on the wall to the reload sounds are just okay.
Overall: Not really worth a download. It’s not a terrible app, but there just isn’t that much to it after you fire three shots.
Virtual Zippo Lighter
Concept: That trick Zippo lighter that you’ve always been found too dangerous to play with in real life is now a lot safer in your pocket and on your iPhone.
Strengths: Flipping the lighter open and flicking the flame on is so strangely satisfying, and the sound is perfect here. You can also customize the graphic by selecting different lighter models and even putting your own text on-screen.
Non-Strengths: Based on my experiences in high school, Zippo lighters were a lot about cool flame-buoyant tricks — and there are no such things here.
Overall: Cute little advertisement for Zippo, but the real ones are still a lot more fun.
