The Financial Times Now Has An iPhone App – Very Limited for Free Users Though

Financial Times on iPhone

FT Mobile is a new iPhone app from The Financial Times of London “ one of the world ‘s leading sources of financial and world news.  Unfortunately, unless you ‘re already an FT subscriber (standard subscription starts at around $3.50/week) the app will offer very little.

Unregistered users can have access to 3 free articles * per month * .  If you register “ which is free “ you get access to a whole ten free articles per month.  Standard subscribers are said to have ‘unlimited access ‘, except that the next sentence in the app ‘s description says that Premium users also are allowed to see the ‘incisive Lex column ‘.  So I think it would be more accurate to say Standard gives almost unlimited access.

I don ‘t know how long the FT has had a subscription model in place for, and just discovered that the same restrictions on access to ‘free articles ‘ are in place for their online site “ but it ‘s a shame that they ‘ve brought it to the iPhone.   I ‘m sure the app will have some sort of audience as the FT is such a hugely respected title, but I can ‘t imagine it will be a large one as there are just too many other very good sources of free or far better priced news (and financial news) on the iPhone, not least the free Wall Street Journal app.

Here ‘s a few screencaps that I managed to grab while already quickly burning through my free articles viewing limit for the month:

The look and feel of the app reminds me a lot of the FT ‘s printed version “ very somber and serious

There ‘s lots of Markets information of course

And a handy currency converter

That ‘s about all the browsing round I did.  Normally, I would give this app a long look, as I was fond of the printed version, but with the 3 or 10 free articles barrier, it ‘s really just not of any interest for me.

Limit

You can find FT Mobile in the App Store now “ the app itself is free, with the content access restrictions described above.
