iFringe “ Edinburgh 2009 is a new (ish) iPhone app that provides a guide to the world ‘s largest “ and IMO greatest “ arts festival “ the Edinburgh Fringe, which is part of the annual festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The app looks very well done, and reminds me how much I miss going to Edinburgh every year for this superb event.
This is honestly one of the things I miss most since I moved back to the US, after many years in the UK – an annual trip to the Edinburgh Festival. I was lucky enough to play with some good (and fun) softball teams that used to make an annual trek up to Edinburgh for a tournament during the last weekend in August.
Edinburgh is a wonderful city, and during the month-long festival each August it is full of people from all over the world soaking up all the great entertainment and shows. To say there ‘s a buzz there during those weeks is a massive understatement. One of the great things about the Fringe in particular is that it tends to feature a lot of acts that are not yet famous, but many that will become the next big thing “ in theatre, or music, or stand up comedy “ in years to come. And if you play your cards right, you may get to see them in one of the many intimate venues where you ‘ll be amidst a crowd of under 100 people.
Here are just a quick little blurb about this awesome festival, from a Wikipedia entry:
Edinburgh Fringe (1947)* ” Started life as a small scale "fringe" event to the EIF, but is now the largest of all the festivals and indeed the largest arts festival in the world.[3] Includes theatre, comedy, music, musicals, dance and children’s shows.
I like iFringe ‘s sum-up line on its App Store description page:
2,000 shows, 275 venues, 25 days. One app will make sense of it all!
Here ‘s a little more on what the app offers:

There’s no advertising, we don’t take cash for listings, and we don’t bother you with shows we don’t recommend. Don’t worry – listings and information are updated for free, right through to the end of Festival 2009.
I really like the sound of the app. Like its stance on no paid listings, all the content relates to recommended shows. There are tons of shows every day / night “ so a guide like this should be enormously helpful.
Also like that it provides guidance on venues, as well as shows
iFringe is a little pricy at $4.99, but it looks worth it to me if it ‘s as good as its App Store description.
If you ‘re anywhere near Scotland during August and have any chance to get yourself over to Edinburgh, DO IT. I ‘d love to be putting this app through its paces and soaking up the festival again this year.
You can find iFringe in the App Store, HERE. If you ‘re going to the festival I ‘d love to hear what you think of this app, and about all your favorite shows and all that jazz.
