 purplera1n jailbreak

Well, I succumbed to temptation once again.  I decided to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS tonight “ and just finished doing it a little while ago.

I literally just got through not very many minutes ago, but I thought I ‘d share some very quick impressions and observations on using the purplera1n jailbreak method.

purplera1n

This is one of “ or possibly the “ fastest jailbreak processes I ‘ve ever used.  I started at 10:47pm and was done at 10:50pm, with iTunes recognizing the iPhone and all looking good “ and that ‘s with fussing around taking some notes during it.  3 minutes, maybe a touch less.  Nice.

This jailbreak feels much more like an Update (as opposed to a restore) “ and is (thus far) silky smooth because of that.  As in, all my iPhone ‘s installed apps are still there, as are my settings and so forth.  Quick and painless.

After purplera1n finishes, you have one new app icon on one of your home screens “ Freeze.  You run this to install Cydia, the current leading jailbreak App Store.  Installing Cydia took around 2 minutes.  After the install I did not have a Cydia icon though, and a Spotlight search failed to find it as well.  A reboot fixed this and I had a Cydia icon.

On its first couple launches Cydia wanted to ‘reorganize ‘ and then apply essential updates.  Both of these got done quite quickly.

Very little seems to have changed in terms of storage space following the jailbreak.  Here ‘s how that looked prior to purplera1n:

iTunes-4

And after the jailbreak:

iTunes-5

Roughly 600MB more taken up by ‘Other ‘, and for some reason around 700MB less space for apps (despite all my apps still being installed at a quick check), after the jailbreak was completed.

OK, that ‘s it for my quick notes.  I ‘m off to do some mission-critical post-jailbreak tasks “ ya know, finding a new theme and stuff. 🙂
