I’d heard that some DS cartridges cost $30. That’s not exactly cheap in an era of massive job and salary cuts. Undoubtedly, Apple’s mobile products are having some effect on DS game sales, but the iPod Touch and iPhone initially cost a lot more and are missing the gaming controls that mobile gamers claim make the DS platform much better for playing games.

It seems unlikely Apple will turn the iPod Touch into a typical gaming machine with the standard physical controls, so hard-core mobile gamers will avoid it. Nintendo can just create a newer version DS that can download games via WiFi and compete head-to-head with Apple. Nintendo won’t suffer as badly especially when the economy turns around. I’m sure Nintendo must have accumulated plenty of cash over the years to spend money on R&D. They’re not out of it yet.
