It looks like the recent 3.0.1 iPhone firmware update didn ‘t just break the purplera1n jailbreak temporarily, but has also led its creator to call it quits on this particular method.
Here ‘s part of what geohot (the developer of purplera1n) has to say about this at his blog site:
Currently, it doesn’t work, and I don’t plan to ever make it work. Apple changed the kernel from 3.0 to 3.0.1, and I patch the kernel in a very specific spot.
Geohot has several other interesting things to say in his post as well, including some thoughts on the differences between his methods and those of the Dev Team, and how they might someday be merged:
I code to make things simple, hacky, and fast. Dev codes to make things proper, slow, and complicated; redsn0w works OOTB. I could imagine a tool that takes the best of both worlds. No reason you need to push buttons or give the jailbreak program an ipsw; you can still write something generic that’ll work on every device and version. And be fast. But I’m too lazy to write it.
He also mentions that ‘someone enterprising ‘ could probably make purplea1n work, but that won ‘t be him.
Here ‘s a very interesting piece he adds at the end of his post though, which indicates we may well see some further jailbreaks from him in future:
If I do another tool release, it’ll hit the ipt3 and ra1nydayless 3GS. Told you I had more holes.
