I just received this push alert from the AP Mobile app, which is supposed to push breaking news to my iPhone. The point of having breaking news pushed is to receive the alert in near real-time.
The alert is time stamped 3:09pm ET, which would be 12:09pm for me on the west coast. But look at the time shown on my iPhone: 12:26pm. This means I didn’t receive this “breaking news” alert until 15 minutes after the fact. After I’d already seen it top the trends on Twitter, received a breaking news e-mail in my inbox, and heard several co-workers talking about it.
I wish I could say that this is a one-time occurrence, but sadly that is not the case. AP Mobile has consistently delivered breaking news updates anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour after the event has occurred. I’ve not yet given it a try, but I’ve hard that BNO News is much more real-time, so I may have to check it out.
Regardless, I’m very unimpressed with AP Mobile. At least it was free.
